Yahoo ! Quo vadis ?
Running through my RSS subscriptions today, I came across two things that I found to be vaguely interconnected
The first was an Interview with Yahoo's CEO Terry Semel in Fool.com in which Terry Semel talks about the competition that Yahoo faces from the likes of MSN / Microsoft and Google
The second was a posting in Joho the Blog : Joho the Blog: When blogs get really popular wherein the hypothesis that as blogs evolve to becomes the medium of mass expression, the disctinction between blogs and discussions on one hand and blogs and email on the other hand would blur
This holds a rather interesting prospect for Yahoo which for long has more or less dominated the portals space with its intermeshed offering of mail, chat, message boards, discussion groups etc etc (backed up by a strong set of verticals) keeping the user well tied-in to Yahoo
The way Google is evolving poses a far greater danger to Yahoo than MSN does. With Google news, they have a News portal that can give me the best of breed news from a wide variety of news sources across the world. Their search, further strengthend by their acquistion of Blogger would give them not just a strong value proposition to make to the user but also a good sustainable revenue model
... and with Blogs & Discussion forums merging on one hand and Blogs & mail on the other ... the question that comes up is ... Yahoo ! Quo Vadis ???
Should I say ... hail the new King ? Google !!!
